Choosing a Username (NetID)<< Back to Account ManagementIntroduction Before you create an account, or request that one be created for you, you need to decide how you are to be known on the internet. You need to create a "user name" or "NetID". This NetID must be unique. Once chosen, this NetID will stay with you as long as you are associated with Rutgers. Please choose wisely. NetID Creation If you have a UNIX account on another Rutgers system, or if you had a UNIX account on a Rutgers system in the past, your previous NetID is still on file and my be assigned to you automatically. There are rules for selecting a NetID. They are as follows: Rules for Creating a NetID
Creation Process The creation process will give you some examples of acceptable username/ NetID's, including your IID. Typically, you can use your last name, your IID, or a combination of your initials and last name to form a NetID. If your choice is already in use, the system will ask you to make another selection. Please choose your NetID carefully. This name will be part of your electronic email address you use for correspondence. In almost all cases, you will not be allowed to change your NetID at a later date simply because it is unprofessional or embarrassing. |
